On Wednesday in New York, Omar Hilal, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized that the Moroccan Sahara has today become a haven of security and stability, a hub for African integration, and a center for shared development, in the context of Morocco’s preparations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Glorious Green March.
In his address to the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the ambassador highlighted that since 1975, and independently of political developments, Morocco has been implementing the legitimate right to development for the population of its southern provinces, pointing to the achievements in strategic infrastructure, economic and development projects, universities, hospitals, and solar and wind energy plants.
Omar Hilal stressed that Morocco’s autonomy plan represents the realistic political solution to the conflict. It is internationally recognized and allows local populations to manage their own affairs under Moroccan sovereignty, with an elected parliament, an independent executive authority, and a judicial body, fully consistent with international law and human rights standards.
He also called on the parties that have prolonged this regional dispute for over half a century to engage sincerely in peace efforts and meaningful negotiations, affirming Morocco’s steadfast commitment to good faith and full respect for the United Nations in achieving a lasting, consensual political solution that preserves the dignity of all parties.
The ambassador further noted that the Moroccan autonomy initiative enjoys growing international support, and that the Sahara has become a key hub for security, regional integration, and major development initiatives, including projects in energy, transportation, and South-South cooperation.
Hilal concluded by emphasizing that the time has come to end the suffering of the population in the Tindouf camps, allow them to return home with dignity, and contribute to the prosperity of the Moroccan Sahara, calling for a consensual solution with no winners or losers, preserving the rights and interests of all parties.
